Toshiko Hayashi started to knit and crochet as a young child. She spent
the best part of her working life as an office secretary until she moved
to the Netherlands, where she set up an import-export company called 'Hayashi
Trading Agency', and a handicraft shop in Amsterdam called 'Toshiko'. It
was in Holland that she picked up knitting again, simply because it was
impossible to find any decent clothes in her own size. She also tried out
a knitting machine and created knitted samples for Brother Co. in Holland.
She set up the handicraft shop with her partner (in business and life) but
he passed away in 1985, and later, in 1990, the shop had to be closed after
repeated burglaries. Following this, she worked for a Japanese firm in Amsterdam
on a part time basis. She came to know about the activities of 'Fushiginoiroito'
through a magazine article and was very much attracted to the way the group
is organized, and decided to join. She learnt to paint on silk whilst in
Holland, and she continues to practice this alongside her knitting.
