Yoshimi Nakai's early
knitting development was based on a love of the handicrafts, and she qualified
as teacher of hand knitting. Her early pieces showed the perfect craftsmanship
one might expect, and although they were all beautifully knitted they lacked
individuality. This changed almost overnight when she created her 1994 piece
entitled 'My Asia'. With this piece she made a radical departure from the
confines of 'handicraft', and it is apparent from her steady output of one
exhibition piece a year how much effort she has been putting into ensuring
that each new work marks a progression from the last. Since 1995, she has
focused on the same subject - ice and snow - and the intensity with which
she pursues this goal is reflected in her work. |
