Noriko Takamatu's knitting was typical handicraft work, based on patterns
such as Fair Isle. She was very uncomfortable when she first attended our
workshop, which took place in a gallery. My intention in choosing an unfamiliar
environment, such as a gallery, as the setting for my workshop, was to offer
ordinary knitters the opportunity to gain confidence in their own knitting
direction. It was not my aim to force them to change direction towards something
more 'artistic'. She accepted the challenge, and without losing her solid
foundation, has been steadily developing her own casual and natural style
of knitting. Her warm personality and down-to-earth attitude to her knitting,
together with the impression created by her pieces, have attracted both
customers and students to her own knitting classes for many years.
